China's Tibetan legislators meet U.S. lawmakers

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of China's National People's Congress (NPC) met with U.S. Congressmen on the Capitol Hill Thursday, on a mission to boost ties between the two countries and dispel misunderstandings about the situation in China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Currently, China and the United States have in general maintained the stable development of bilateral relations and the two countries are making efforts to push ahead with a cooperative partnership, said Weise, head of the delegation made up of Tibetan legislators of the NPC.

He also expressed firm opposition to a resolution which had just been passed by the U.S. Senate to "honor" the "contribution" of Lodi Gyari, a private representative of the Dalai Lama.

The resolution has interfered in China's internal affairs and hurt the feelings of Tibetan people, Weise said as he met with U.S. Representatives Charles Boustany and Rick Larsen, co-chairs of the bipartisan U.S.-China Working Group in the House.

Weise stressed that the Tibet issue is a pure domestic issue of China and a matter of principle concerning China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, so passing such a resolution by the U.S. congress would have a negative impact on the development of the relations and mutual understandings between the two countries, Weise said.

The delegation is currently on a tour of Canada and the United States beginning on September 14. They leave for New York on Friday.
